What solar actually needs from you, what wears out, and the one component you should expect to replace.

The short answer: almost nothing. Panels have no moving parts and routinely run 25 to 30 years untouched. The realistic maintenance budget is one inverter replacement somewhere in the system’s life, and occasional attention to anything that grows or nests.

The inverter is the thing

It’s the only component doing continuous electronic work, and it’s the one that typically needs replacing before the panels do.

Budget roughly $1,500 to $3,000 for a string inverter replacement, including labor. On a 25-year timeline that’s real money and it belongs in your payback calculation. Most people never include it.

Microinverters last longer but sit on the roof under the panels, so replacing one costs more in labor even though the part is cheap. Swings and roundabouts.

Cleaning — mostly unnecessary

Rain does the job. Panels are smooth glass at an angle, and dust washes off.

Cleaning is worth doing if:

  • You’re somewhere genuinely dry with months between rainfalls
  • You’re under trees that drop sap or blossom, or near a farm field
  • Birds have been busy, and it’s concentrated rather than scattered
  • You can see a visible film from the ground

Typical loss from ordinary dust is a few percent. In dusty conditions it can reach 15–25%, which is worth acting on.

If you do clean them

Water only, or water with a little mild soap. A soft brush or squeegee on a pole, from the ground where possible.

Never use a pressure washer — it drives water past the seals. Never use abrasive pads or harsh chemicals; the anti-reflective coating is the thing you’d damage. Never spray cold water on hot panels, which can crack glass. Early morning is the right time.

And don’t climb on a roof to do a job worth a few percent. Hire it or leave it.

Snow

Mostly handles itself. Panels are smooth and tilted, and they warm slightly as soon as light reaches them, so snow tends to slide.

Don’t try to clear it. You will scratch panels, and standing on a snowy roof is how people get hurt. Winter production is low regardless of snow — short days and a low sun angle matter more — so the amount you’d recover isn’t worth it.

What to actually watch

  • Your monitoring app. Compare this month against the same month last year. A gradual decline is normal; a sudden drop means something has failed.
  • New shade. Trees grow. A branch that cleared the array five years ago may not now.
  • Birds and squirrels nesting underneath. The most common real problem. They chew wiring and make a mess. Critter guard — mesh around the array perimeter — is cheap and worth fitting.
  • After a big storm. A look from the ground for anything loose, lifted or obviously damaged.

Beware maintenance contracts

Annual maintenance plans are frequently sold and rarely necessary. There is very little to maintain, and your equipment is already under warranty.

Before signing one, ask exactly what is performed, how often, and what it covers that the warranty doesn’t. If the answer is a visual inspection and a wash, you’re paying for something you can do yourself in ten minutes from the ground.

Typical figures, not guarantees. Equipment life varies by brand, climate and installation quality. Anything involving getting on your roof carries fall risk — most of what’s described here can be done from the ground or hired out cheaply.
